VX5 chosen for McCabes Guitar Shop Anniversary celebration
November 2008
Legendary Southern California venue McCabe’s Guitar Shop held their 50th Anniversary Celebration on October 2, 2008 at Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA. 17 acts played during the 5 hour set. Simon Tassano, FOH engineer for Richard Thompson, oversaw the sound for the show. For vocals, he chose the Audix VX5 vocal condenser.
Reflecting the eclectic history of the venue, artists included Mr. Thompson, Jackson Browne, David Lindley, The Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band, Peter Rowan, legendary folk singer Odetta, Los Lobos, Dan Hicks, and several special guests. The house band featured Michael Jerome on drums, Debra Dobkin on percussion, and Taras Prodaniuk on bass.
Tassano said the show was seamless, with 1-2 minute cross-overs between acts. “I got to listen to a lot of artists singing through the VX5,” he said. “It handled the range of vocal types / styles extremely well. I’ve been using the VX5 with Richard Thompson for over a year now and continue to enjoy its response, definition and presence. I think I've been asked ‘What's the vocal mic you are using?’ more times since changing to a VX5 than any other mic that I've consistently used for RT's vocals.”
